BEAR ISLAND BOATWORKS - (Mactaquac, New Brunswick) The boatshop where it all began. Bear Island Boatworks was originally set up by Derek and his father; Arthur, specifically to build the Open 40. Situated on the homestead property in Mactaquac, New Brunswick, along the beautiful St. John River, the shop became a focal point of the supporters and boat building crew for two years as the hull and deck structure was completed. The boatbuilding crew consisted of: Arthur Hatfield, Derek Hatfield, Hal Hatfield, Eugene McLellan, Keith Robinson, Mike Cashin, Mike Fenety, Bob Stuart. The Toronto builders included: Derek Hatfield, Keith Robinson and Adrian Truis.

BRUNSWICK TECHNOLOGIES, Inc - (Brunswick, ME) A manufacturer of fiberglass knitted reinforcements to the composite industry, BTI supplied all the carbon, kevlar and e-glass knitted multidirectional fabrics for the boat's hull, deck, bulkheads, rudders and interior.

CABINETECH INC - (Fredericton, New Brunswick) A cabinet and commercial furniture manufacturer, constructed the complete navigation station and galley area for the boat. The owner, Mike Cashin, is an avid sailor and has provided many personal man hours on the boat construction.

CANADIAN GENERAL-TOWER LIMITED - Canadian General-Tower is the leading supplier in North America of flexible polymer cover stocks, including vinyl, for a variety of served industries including the automotive interior industry, the swimming pool industry, and a number of other markets including book binding, roofing, and environmental containment.

CAPITAL CRANE RENTAL LTD - (Fredericton, New Brunswick) Provided the crane for the delicate turning of the hull and then subsequently loading the boat onto the truck for moving to Ontario.

DRESSER DESIGNS - (Hingham, Mass) Bob Dresser was the principal naval architect, responsible for the overall design of the boat in conjunction with Derek and after many hours of discussion regarding the race and the conditions that will be encountered.

 

EARTH RANGERS - Founded by the Schad Foundation, Earth Rangers is a charitable organization with a mission to "inspire within children a life-long passion to improve the environment". Earth Rangers recently started construction of a $20 million wildlife rehabilitation, education, and research centre in Woodbridge, Ontario. This facility incorporates a world class veterinarian hospital, Canada's only oil spill response unit dedicated to wildlife, and interactive educational displays. Incorporating leading edge environmental technologies, the Centre will be the most energy efficient building of its kind. Opening in September 2003, it will be a showplace, attracting thousands of visitors from around the world. Serving as the new home for Earth Rangers, the Centre will also be the base of operations for an exciting outreach programs focused on:

  • In-school environmental education;
  • Hands-on conservation and restoration projects; and
  • Sponsorship for disadvantaged children to visit outdoor centres and attend summer camps.

J.D.Edwards - a Business Enterprise Software Provider have donated the laptops (including backups) to be used to integrate communications and navigation on the Spirit of Canada. These vital tools run the systems that provide the means to interpret the weather, allow Derek to send/receive emails on the boat as well as run the navigational software.


KENWOOD COMMUNICATIONS - kindly supplied their Kenwood TS-50S which operates in the 160M TO 10M Amateur bands with 500kHz to 30MHz general coverage reception. The TS-50S transceiver has dual VFOÕs, supports LSB, USB, CW AM and FM with adjustable output levels of 10, 50 or 100 watts. Menu programming, 100 user memories, AIP, RIT, IF shift, AGC and TF-set round out the features. When hooked up to a computer, the TS-50S can send and receive radio-telex messages. OMBRELLE - (Montreal, Canada) Has provided financial assistance and marketing opportunities. Ombrelle is the trade name for a highly successful sunscreen which will be used exclusively by Derek to provide protection from the sun as he races around the world.

PORT CREDIT YACHT CLUB - (Port Credit, Ontario) The Port Credit Yacht Club (PCYC) is the birth place of singlehanded sailing on Lake Ontario. The Club has sponsored the Spirit of Canada with a senior membership and a docking slip until the boat was sailed to the Atlantic Ocean for the start of the Around Alone 2002.

PROFURL (France) - Has provided two complete furling systems for the boat. Profurl has long been recognized as the furler of choice for singlehanded around the world racing.

QUANTUM SAILS - (Toronto, Ontario) Provided design and manufacturing of the boat's full inventory of sails. Principal sail designer Brian Chapman and owner Greg Bratkiw are long time sailing friends of Derek's and have been involved in all his sailing projects.

THE ROYAL NOVA SCOTIA YACHT SQUADRON - the oldest yacht club in North America with a rich sailing tradition. Considered one of the premier facilities on the east coast of Canada it has always welcomed visiting yachtsmen from around the world. Spirit of Canada was no exception, the RNSYS showed their support for the project by sponsoring Derek with dockage during his month long preparations for his single-handed qualifier and the First Annual Route Halifax-St. Pierre Race. The Club continued to show their enthusiasm for Derek's endeavours by sponsoring him with an Out of Port Membership while Spirit of Canada races around the world. Derek looks forward to sailing the Spirit of Canada back to the RNSYS next summer.

VETROTEX CERTAINTEED - (Wichita Falls, TX) The U.S. subsidiary of Saint-Gobain, one of the world's largest makers of fiberglass, Vetrotex CertainTeed specializes in e-glass reinforcements for the composite industry. The company supplied all raw materials to BTI for the building of the boat.

WIGGERS CUSTOM YACHTS - (Bowmanville, Ontario) Provided technical assistance during boat construction. Was responsible for the painting of the hull and deck using the Interspray 800 System from Interlux. Assisted with the construction of the canting keel system and the rudders. Provided travelift services from the shop to water.
