In November 2008, one Canadian will face the oceans of the world to compete in the most astounding contest on the planet - The Vendee Globe Single-Handed Around the World Yacht Race.

The Vendee Globe is acknowledged as the toughest event for an individual in any sport; a single-handed, non-stop around-the-world ocean race played out over three months and 27,000 miles of grueling competition.

The competitors are an elite group of men and women who call on huge reserves of self-reliance, courage and stamina to pass through some of the remotest and most dangerous places on Earth, pushing themselves and today’s hi-tech Open 60 racing sailboats to the very edge.

Open 60s are the Formula One race cars of sailing – they are 60 feet long and built from carbon fiber using the latest composite technology. For speed, they are designed to be as light as possible but strong enough to withstand the worst the seas can throw at them.

Acclaimed sailor Derek Hatfield will take Canada’s name forward to the world for a second time as he sets out to win the Vendee Globe and follow on from his inspiring performance in the 2002–2003 “Around Alone” race.

Derek will also use his Vendee Globe venture to promote the importance of environmental education. This message will be delivered in conjunction with Earth Rangers, a World Wildlife Foundation partnership organization dedicated to “inspiring our children to adopt a lifelong passion to improve the environment”.
