My vision is that international sailing events such as the Vendee Globe Around the World Race will be used to showcase the amazing resourcefulness of Canada and its people around the globe and, at the same time, help to promote a greater respect for our environment.

I know there is power in this message, a power that resonates with Canadians everywhere. During my last round the world race I was astounded and humbled by the outpouring of unsolicited encouragement and support I received from fellow citizens who were prepared to do whatever was needed to ensure that I prevailed.

This campaign is building on that support and is a step towards a longer term goal of ensuring that successive generations have every opportunity to carry this “Spirit of Canada” into the future.

Establishing Canada as a world-class contender on the international ocean racing circuit is one aspect of what your support can achieve but, as an awe-inspiring sport that pushes the limits of human endeavor, I believe it can be used to achieve and communicate so much more.

In addition to being a powerful metaphor for individual and organizational achievement, an event such as the Vendee Globe Around the World Race can be used as a golden lens capable of focusing public attention on deeper values and global responsibilities.

Accordingly, as part of my next campaign, I have formed an association with Earth Rangers – an expanding and well-founded organization dedicated to inspiring within our children a lifelong passion for the environment.

As my team and I once again build towards facing one of the most demanding challenges on Earth, the prospect of promoting Canada, representing your company and acknowledging my supporters on the global stage fills me with great pride and an immense sense of privilege.
